OVERALL EVALUATION:
Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Mitsubishi Montero was redesigned for the 1992 model year. Frontal airbags for both the driver and passenger became standard beginning with the 1996 model year.
Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement wasn't well controlled. There was far too much upward movement of the steering wheel, which contributed to the dummy's head bottoming out the airbag and hitting the steering wheel. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof side rail.
Injury measures — Measures taken from the chest and legs indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy hit the steering wheel rim through the airbag indicating that injuries to the head would be possible. Forces on the neck indicate that injuries to the neck would be possible. Head acceleration from the roof rail hit was low.
